McNast is the shit.
on this post, if no other one, i highly encourage discussion and comments.
which is why no tracks from the MCA album leak will be on this site.
i’m dissapointed.
it’s not about shit leaking and people having it, it’s about this leaking and being so widespread.
alot of people say ‘get over it,’
shit* really meant that much to me i guess. it’s something very disheartening to see the best artist of my generation(yes, singular) be treated this way when 2 years ago everyone was on this man’s nuts like no other and swearing up and down that their lives were changed. i guess i wasn’t too far off on my first few thoughts on this shit from back in the day.
* by shit i mean the proper release of Dilla’s last, unadulterated, original, unreleased record.

If Dilla was authentic for you, let it rep what it should- inside. The way things are fadded and flossed has even spilled into the race for president. Marketing, showcasing, and “manufactured knowledge” are the legacies of these times. Stay up, i’m in the D, I see you.

i’d rather have the joy of listening to this album postponed by 10 years than have ma dukes suffer needlessly.

Word, Andres. I see where you’re coming from on this one. I honestly had no idea about the whole situation, aside from MCA shelving it and folks circulating a petition to get it released. But evidently it’s bigger than that as finances being given to his estate are being withheld too. I don’t know, man, I think the battle still lies with MCA. But that’s just coming from what I’ve read and heard. You probably have more info on all this than I do.

Wow. Dilla…rather Dilla’s music (if it can even be said they are seperate) means a lot to you. I’ve been working on an article title “Defending Dilla”, to answer people who suggest his rep for producing among the finest music in Hip Hop is unwarranted. Every time I read your blog I feel unsuitable for the task.

I wish I knew who the person was who started the major leak. I knew a select few people who have had it for a while now (a couple of years) and held on to that shit for dear life. I understood and respected that. And I NEVER asked them to share. They did a great job keeping that under lock and key. I know it was just last month that the snowball effect happened as Benji B was playing tracks on his show. From then, I knew it was inevitable.
It does kinda suck that it’s kinda out there now and it’s no longer legend. And cats had the nerve to leak the Kanye track first (of course)! Which is probably one of the wacker songs on the album. All we can hope for is what we’ve been hoping since the man passed, that he generates more talk and more fans. It’s all bittersweet.

I have mixed feelings on this one; it might never come out, it might come out in a few years- who knows; that’s a label-political-marketing-thing also I’d say (not?). We might be even surprised if we knew who leaked it in the first place?
A lot of stuff leaks (on purpose or not) and probably to most people out there, this album is not as special as to some others. I guess “we” also don’t know how real/complete/whatever this really is- it’s like with those beat tapes…and all other bootlegs…
The whole deal reminds me of Ruff Draft. When it originally came out on Mummy I bought a copy, like any other record really, probably because it was a release out of Germany (therefor easier to get here in Europe than in the US?).
After some years when Dilla mixes spread on the web and even more after he died (with Ruff Draft tracks in it) there was this hype around this record, I guess because of the small units that were pressed. $ 120,- on eBay! Then it became wider spread and then also re-release with bonus tracks on ST (yeah!!) and now… the fuss about it is over… a lot of guys don’t even know how old it is.. (personally I guess to me Ruff Draft is more special than MCA, it’s “better” I guess)..
I never tell people not to d/l music, only when they don’t buy the release afterwards if they like it, or go to a concert or something. I download, I copy and I ALSO buy a f*ck load of cd’s/vinyls/mp3’s and go to shows etc. all the time. I know I am not the average guy – because the average guy these days never pays for music – but the average guy is just going for hypes anyway… this is a hype now, it won’t be in 3 months and then we are still waiting for the real deal with this record, no?!
As far as money wise goes, it doesn’t matter if it’s leaked now and/or comes out later or not. Shit will be copied after day one of the release and spread like shit (as goes for any artist) if it’s hot..
Are we any different than true Prince fans who have a gazillion bootlegs of unreleased songs/taped shows etc? I guess not… I’m happy to be able to listen to the tracks… is that wrong? should it be kept under the hood in a small circle? The tracks sound “done” (though altered), so it’s not some pre-release-demo stuff (or is it?) – I have NO idea really.
What a rant.. and does it make any sense?
As Le Le would say; Bitch, you’re breakfast!
Keep up the good work with this blog; one of the better ones as far as hip hop goes! There’s too much shite on the www

sweeneykovar // May 8, 2008 at 7:41 pm |
thanks for reading the site, but
Prince isn’t Dilla.
yes it does matter. the hype will go away in 3 months for all the fucks who said dilla changed their lives and are spreading the album all over the place
again, you can’t blame people for wanting to hear it. this isn’t about every single person that downloaded the album, its about the way its getting passed around and shared so freely when some of the people doing that have a pretty good idea of how delicate the situation is.
i understand where you’re coming from. but it’s not just any album leak.
again thanks for reading, shit, from Germany? crazy.
PS. i dont necessarily think Ruff Draft is better than MCA, just grimier.
Dutchie // May 8, 2008 at 10:45 pm |
Not from Germany, The Netherlands (Madlib tomorrow in A’dam!)
I’m not trying to say it doesn’t matter, if that’s how it might look! More like an “observation” of todays www-society and how people act.
I admit – I didn’t think (enough) about the fact that there are some people who (started) spreading this – as if it’s the normal thing you do – knowing how delicate the situation is. I took it probably too far out of the context, maybe because I’m not 100% aware about how delicate it might be (I just knew the talk about the album and was always very curious what/when/who/etc.).
Comparing Prince to Dilla? Hehe, they’re both musical geniuses some might say (not that I’m into Prince really). I mentioned him because of the big library he has music wise and I’ve seen highly active forums where people seem to have a gazillion discs with his music released or not released etc. – we’re getting off topic again, I’ll shut up
andre // May 11, 2008 at 11:16 am |
hey andres, my name is andre, you write an excellent blog that i look up to a lot. its weird we also have a deep connection with jay, and my feelings about the leak are completely reciprocal. just wanted to remind you that your blog inspires a lot of feeling in a lot of people, and if anything youre doing your part in making jay not just another fad. i actually talked with blu in madrid when i saw him over there (i was studying abroad there, from Topanga Canyon originally) and we mentioned dilla and the fad thats is going around. how lots of hipsters were loving the wave etc. but also how he really did affect people: like you, me, blu, and all the other true die hard hip hop heads. just wanted to say man, youre not alone on how you feel. big ups on everything youre doing here again. the dilla piece you wrote is amazing, i felt the say way first time i heard jay. his music speaks for itself, like it always will. peace be with you

Dilla deserved a better treatment.
