king of the beats

February 14, 2008 · 5 Comments

so at first I wasn’t going to do a Dilla post. I mean I kind of told my story on the man last year

especially after seeing the internet flooded with them in the past few, but there’s some things that i feel haven’t been addressed yet, so…

it’s been 2 years since his passing, but the story’s still the same.

Jay Dee (aka Jay Dilla aka John Doe aka a bunch of other shit) was a musical genius, humble, completely dedicated to his craft and creatively light years ahead of what everyone else is doing.

it’s been 2 years since his passing, and the aftermath has been bittersweet.

more and more people know the name Dilla and Detroit as a whole seems to be finally be getting the attention they deserve. still, his much circulated beattapes are caught up in legal red tape and the hospital bills aren’t going away. like i said it’s bittersweet.

for the music scene it’s been extremely beneficial. Dilla has been establishing himself as a cornerstone for the future generation of hip hop. This has and will continue to make people step their game up, i believe, because the legacy Dilla left was concentrated on the music, not an image or a message. simply incredible music.

what else is their to say?

it’s been 2 years since his passing

and Dilla’s still king of the beats

a few of the most fun, poignant and beautiful Dilla related cuts.

Invincible – In The Mourning

1st Down – No Place To Go

Mos Def – Saturday Night (jay dee remix)

Carlos Nino & Miguel Atwood-Ferguson – Find a Way

Steve Spacek – Eve (jay dee remix)

Jay Dee – Think Twice instrumental

Worldwide w/ Gilles Peterson – Jay Dee tribute (February of 2006)
