what can i say? amazing writing, for sure like a private journal accidentally publicized, but to take patience and study, on repeat, dilla's music is amazing because most of us folks bob heads without the slightest inclination of who he sampled...even when it's occasionally obvious. not to mention having his music grow with periods of ur life...i bet u have moments when a beat drops n it takes you back to a particular smell or phrase someone said. thumbs up, man!

[...] shit really meant that much to me i guess. it’s something very disheartening to see the best artist of my generation(yes, singular) be treated this way when 2 years ago everyone was on this man’s nuts like no other and swearing up and down that their lives were changed. i guess i wasn’t too far off on my first few thoughts on this shit from back in the day.
I admit I felt like one of these Johnny-come-lately "Dilla-ites" when he died. But I look back and I can remember emulating him ever since I heard Like Water for Chocolate. The lazy drum patterns and off beat claps... I loved it. I tried so hard to become what Jay already was. Every time he switched up his sound I switched up my sound. He was the go-to guy for me. I was blurring the line between idolatry and just plain biting. And, I didn't care. When those "Dilla Changed My Life" shirts came out, I understood exactly what the designer was talking about. I sometimes feel like I have this void in my heart but I know things happen in this imperfect life. Dilla was a big deal before I knew he was a big deal and he will always be a big deal to me. But there comes a time when the student has to graduate and become a teacher. Peace.

i just went through the same exact sequence with dilla's work.

i heard the "ruff draft" album, thought "hmmm", then didn't listen to it for a year. then i slowly unearthed and realized his tribe called quest work. then i heard his contributions to common's "finding forever" and started to realize.

now i'm bumpin donuts every day and i'm addicted. i just don't understand how he makes his drums "umphfff" on those tracks.

Real nice post. I slept the first go 'round...
I remember wondering back when, 'who is this dude messing around with ATCQ's work?' when I first heard of Jay Dee. I thought Tribe was giving him too much freedom behind the boards. After all, they just dropped albums that redefined the game with Low End Theory, and then, Midnight Marauders...
Like you, it took me years to comprehend what all the fuss was REALLY about.
I won't say there isn't a day that goes by w/o me listening to Dilla, but I can assure you that when I start to feel betrayed by some aspects of what hip-hop has become, putting on a Dilla joint, or tribute mix filled with his work always makes me remember the creativity that drew me to this in the first place.
